Gum Bichromate

Gum bichromate is a 19th-century photographic printing process known for its painterly, expressive qualities. It involves coating paper with a mixture of watercolor pigment, gum arabic, and potassium dichromate, which hardens in proportion to light exposure under a negative. After exposure, the print is developed in water, washing away the unhardened areas and revealing the image. The process is typically done in layers, allowing for rich tonal range and the addition of multiple colors. Due to its hands-on nature and artistic flexibility, gum bichromate is often favored by photographers interested in blending photography with traditional art techniques.

Salted Paper

Salted paper printing is one of the earliest photographic processes, developed in the 1830s by William Henry Fox Talbot. The process involves soaking paper in a salt solution, then coating it with silver nitrate to make it light-sensitive. A contact negative is placed directly on the treated paper and exposed to sunlight, creating a soft, matte image as the silver darkens. After exposure, the print is fixed and washed to remove unexposed silver, preserving the image. Known for its warm tones and delicate detail, salted paper printing produces uniquely beautiful, ephemeral-looking photographs.
